After nearly a year in various studios across both North and South America, Boogarins pop out a fuzzy and colorful lyric video for a new track, this time sung in English by friend and touring companion John Schmersal of Braniac, Enon and Caribou fame.

‘A Pattern Repeated On’ follows up on the same pessimism and darkness found in their surprise hit single from the fall (‘Elogio a Instituição do Cinismo’) — incorporating modern hip-hop grooves via drummer Ynaiã Benthroldo and his first studio release with the band, and an increasing tendency toward concise psychedelic pop.

These two new developments (English and psych pop/beat maker grooves) might give a glimpse of what is to come. An extensive North American tour in June and July is certain to give you an opportunity to witness firsthand what these Brazilian natives are conjuring up.

Heavy Duty By Josiah Hughes/Exclaim Magazine (Canada) Portland's Mattress centres on the claustrophobic bedroom soul of weirdo Rex Marshall and his synthesiser. But on Heavy Duty, his debut full-length for Edmonton's Reluctant Recordings, his minimal, dark electro beats take a backseat to his sinister songwriting. Opener "Pollution" sets the tone with its eerie sounds and hopeless lyrics, while "Go Ahead and Litter" almost gets dance-y, with its dead funk guitar drone. The real gem is closing track "Bring It Down," with its heavy synths and melodic singing, showing a little heart amidst the creepiness. Limited to 300 and featuring shiny artwork courtesy of the Doers' Sean Maxey, this is a rare treat in outsider pop.
