Shelley Short / Johanna Kunin
Alternately dramatic and humble, dynamic and hushed, Shelley Short's ethereal style is full of
mystery and portent. Her intimate voice and sincere delivery lend her often dark and personal songs
a sense of substance and caprice, gained in some measure from early influences: Ron Davies, Roger
Miller, Bob Dylan, Jimmie Rodgers, and Joni Mitchell.
After recording her debut CD in New Mexico and Portland, Shelley Short left the Pacific Northwest
and headed east to Chicago. Seeking a more complex sound for her next album, Captain Wild Horse
(Rides the Heart of Tomorrow), Short began writing songs before and immediately after her move
across the country. Inspired by her love of snow and rain, her love for people, and even by Marlin
Brando’s character “Terry” from the movie On The Waterfront, the album is tinted with the tones of
reflection and nostalgia. Shelley's third album, "Water For The Day," will be released in spring, 2008.
The Seattle Times calls Johanna Kunin “an extraordinarily gifted singer.” She was raised in the midwest,
but her off kilter jazz-influenced pop style grew out of vocal improvisation practiced at Seattle’s Cornish
College. Initial treatment of her vocals as an instrument without lyrics resulted in unique harmonies and an
avant garde approach to song writing. She has just finished her debut album, “Clouds Electric.” The
Seattle Weekly says: “Think Joni Mitchell times Beth Orton divided by peaceful open spaces.”
