Erin McKeown (duo) / Justin Jude
From elegant pop to balls-out rock, sweet electronics to witty swing, Erin McKeown has packed a ton of music into her young career. With 5 albums, 2 EPs, and numerous soundtracks and compilations to her credit, the 29-year-old songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hasn't stopped for a breather in the last 10 years. Along the way she has averaged 200 shows a year and garnered the praise of fans and critics alike. McKeown's newest release is Lafayette, a rollicking evening with her six-piece Little Big Band.
"Erin McKeown will get you happy with her traditional pop revamps." ~ People Magazine
"Her clear mezzo-soprano sounds perpetually optimistic, and so do the syncopated electric guitar parts she picks and plucks through the sparsely arranged but fully realized songs. A degree in ethnomusicology, and African undercurrents, separate her from more rhythmically earthbound folk-rockers." ~ John Pareles, NYT
Ms. Mckeown, one of the freshest singer-songwriters of her generation, has chosen this time around to cut an album of standards (Sing You Sinners.) What sets it apart from the superficially similar efforts of such aging rock stars as Linda Ronstadt and Rod Stewart is that Ms. Mckeown isn't recycling the smooth sounds of yesteryear. Instead, she sings "Something's Gotta Give," and "Just One of Those Things" as if she'd written them herself, performing them in the casual, slightly rough-hewn style of her previous albums, "We Will Become Like Birds" and "Grand." The effect is both arrestingly personal and utterly contemporary...."~ Wall street Journal
The change of stage name from Justin Carroll to Justin Jude represents both a re-invention of this singer-songwriter's sound and an introduction of his music to a wider circle of listeners. "Truce," his first true studio album (11/07), features Justin Jude's signature folk-pop style, but ventures into rock, R&B and even gospel, establishing Justin as a true jack-of-all-trades.
Pinning this soul-singer down to any one genre is nearly impossible. Described by one reviewer as "Pete Yorn meets Pete Seeger," Justin is known for his acrobatic voice, huge range and inventive guitar work. The fusion of so many styles and a one-of-a-kind voice, makes "Truce" is destined for popular and radio appeal. It lives up to the stark praise lavished on Justin by The Oregonian: "Vibrant."
Having shared the stage with established touring acts like Lisa Loeb and Lucy Kaplansky, in 2007 Justin has focused on staying close to home in the Northwest, sharing shows with such acts as Scott Fisher, Liv Warfield, The Dimes, Garth Michael McDermott, Chris Robley and Breanna Paletta of Rye Hollow.
"Justin walks the walk of a bona fide talent," says Dave Lowensohn of famed folk-pop group Speechwriters LLC. "He shoots from the hip and aims for the heart, often hitting the boogie shoe with round two and inevitably leaving the room too soon."
